Relocate your treasure to the roof. It Will still be accessible at a moment’s notice, and you’ll regain some long-lost floor space, at minimum cost. For many of us, heaven is having a place to put or everything. If you are a collector, have a space-hungry hobby or share your house with kids, you need storage – and plenty it!
Your roof may offer an ideal solution if it is high-pitched, but even a low-pitched roof contains a surprising amount of space you can use.
Before any work starts, call all doors and openings well, to avoid fine dust floating down into the house – even if all you’re using a screwdriver.
Line the area if you wish, but it’s not necessary. To line the ceiling, use industrial plastic to stop dust settling and to protect the area against rain that could find its way through a title.
Make a single floor using sheets of particle board screwed into position. (Be aware that hammering in nails may damage a plaster ceiling below).
If there are several support jutting out from the roof, you will have problems putting in floorboards. Try working around them, using big sheets of moisture-resistant particle board cut in half and trimmed around support.
It may not look very glamorous, but you’ll still be able to use the space. Many companies make a range of fold-up ladders, designed according to the amount of use they will get.

A sturdy timber ladder (which looks more like a set of stairs) is best if you plan to use the attic regularly. A ladder can be installed by a handy home person, but an expert will install it at no significant cost.
To do it yourself, measure and cut the opening. Fit the retractable ladder and finish the opening with a mitered architrave, as pictured on the opposite page.
If you think your roof space has potential beyond providing a little extra storage (perhaps as a home office), it might be worth putting in roof windows for ventilation and light.
Make the most of your new attic area by storing your hidden clutter in shelving or labeled archive boxes so that everything is easy to find again.
A hallway is a good for the ladder because it allows easy access and causes minimal disruption. Have the installer check the roof for obstructions such as pipes, electrical wiring, and main structural beams. We hope the article about setting up to storage and storage stairs ideas useful for us.
