Lavatory basins come in shapes and sizes for almost building and remodeling plan. Some lavatories are even being called “vanities” because of for the pride function of an extended top surface. Double lavatory basins increase the use of the bathroom toilet.
Today’s flexibility of bathroom design and planning is apparent in the lavatory. Many unusual shapes have been developing for bathrooms made of vitreous china and enameled cast iron, and the addition of toilets made from fiberglass-reinforced plastic has further increased design possibilities. Cultured marble bathrooms are both attractive and functional.
Toilets come in a variety of sizes, from 18 to 19 inches wide to a 50-inch-wide lavatory and counter (although the basin itself is 18 inches wide). Standart height is 31 to 34 inches from floor to bowl rim; you want to install it higher in a bathroom to be used by adult only.
Examine the actual lavatories available from the manufacturers to determine the size of the basin that will best serve your needs. Sometimes a bowl that is quite shallow can be unsatisfactory.
The lavatory that is supported by the bathroom wall may have additional supporting legs or a single China leg, and cabinets for storage can be built under the lavatory, but the primary support still comes from wall brackets or hangers. The rectangular shape is predominant for wall-hung lavatories. A corner-fitting lavatory can save space.
Some models of the wall-hung lavatory come with a ledge or shelf back that allows the temporary storage of toilet articles. The ledge back may be combined with a splash back. Soap dishes may be recesses in the front portion of the basin, out of sight, or depressions in back of the basin.
Lavatories in Cabinet
The advantage of placing a lavatory on or in a cabinet structure is that users are of counter top is provided on either side of the basin. Also, two bathroom basins can be provided in a single table top.
These lavatories may be rectangular, oval, or circular; they are available in vitreous china, enameled cast iron, cultured marble, and fiberglass-reinforced plastic. With the variety of colors, they come in; it is possible to use them as color accents in the bathroom decorating scheme. The laminated plastic used for counter tops also give great flexibility in bathroom decor.

Many of newer lavatory units are self-rimming for appearance and ease of installation. The basin can have flat or rolled rim, or be installed as an entire toilet and shelf unit on top of the cabinet.
Whatever cabinet structure is chosen for the lavatory, sufficient space should be left under the lavatory to permit any plumbing repairs required.
Choice of fittings
Fittings are coming into their own as objects of beauty and function. Most are made of brass and are chromium plated. The chromium can be brushed to give a soft effect. Some are 24-carat gold electroplated. Decorator touches are provided by the use of acrylic and plastic handles.
Separate “hot” and “cold” controls for a single faucet are most common. But push-pull valves that allow control of water temperature from a single action lever also are available. More elaborate controls enable you to dial the temperature that you desire.
Most lavatories have a pop-up drain and an overflow opening in the front of the basin.
As a result of a Cornell University report on the bathroom, one manufacturer is offering a lavatory faucet that directs water in an upward, parabolic that. This arrangement is convenient for washing hands, brushing teeth, and getting a drink of water. The water from the spout does not splash when it strikes the basin.
Design improvements suggested in the Cornell report would make the lavatory “…. higher and wider with a fountain-type water source replacing faucets and enabling variation of water height. It would be contoured to provide more washing room, and a swirling water action would make it nearly self-cleaning. Throttle-type controls would be at one side, getting them out of the way of the washer, and a splash lip at the front of the lavatory would help keep person and floor dry.
